Sulking Room Pink (295) is Farrow & Ball's muted, romantic rose: a pink with enough grey and earth in it that it reads as grown-up rather than sugary. Farrow & Ball describe it as a colour not to be seen as overtly pink, and that is exactly its appeal. It brings warmth and softness to a room without any of the sweetness people worry about with pink.
It is a much-loved colour, used everywhere from bedrooms and sitting rooms to hallways and kitchens. Here is what makes it work, how it behaves in different light, and the colours that sit best beside it.

What colour is Sulking Room Pink?
Sulking Room Pink is a deep, muted rose with a soft, powdery quality. In some lights its neutral side comes forward, which gives it a slightly edgier feel than more classic pinks. Farrow & Ball give it a light reflectance value (LRV) of 30.4, which places it firmly in the mid tones: deep enough to wrap a room in colour, light enough not to close it in.
The name comes from the boudoir. Farrow & Ball explain that the word derives from the French bouder, meaning to sulk, so a boudoir was originally a room to retreat to. It suits the colour well: quiet, private and comforting.
If you are drawn to pink but unsure, our article The New Neutral: Rediscovering Pink explains why shades like this behave more like a neutral than a statement.
How it changes with the light
Like every Farrow & Ball colour, Sulking Room Pink is rich in pigment and responds strongly to light. In a bright, sunny room it shows its rosy warmth. In cooler light, or on a dull day, the grey in it comes through and it settles into something closer to a dusky neutral.
That is what makes it so easy to live with. It never looks the same twice, but it never looks garish either. In the evening, under lamps, it becomes warm and enveloping, which is why it is such a popular choice for bedrooms and snugs. As always, try a sample pot on a large board and look at it morning and evening before committing, and see our guide to choosing colours by room orientation.

Colours that go with Sulking Room Pink
Farrow & Ball suggest Skimming Stone (241) as its complementary white, a soft, warm light grey that is ideal for ceilings and woodwork. Beyond that, they suggest three schemes with Sulking Room Pink on the walls:
- Soft and tonal. Shaded White (201) as an accent with Drop Cloth (283) on the trim, for a gentle, layered look.
- Light and fresh. School House White (291) with Shadow White (282), which keeps the scheme airy.
- Bolder contrast. Bancha (298), a deep green, with De Nimes (299), a muted blue. Pink and green is a classic pairing, and this one has real depth.
For something lighter in the same spirit, Farrow & Ball point to Setting Plaster (231) and Peignoir (286). For a moodier version, look at Charleston Gray (243) or London Clay (244).

Where to use it, and which finish
Sulking Room Pink suits almost any room where you want warmth. It is lovely in a bedroom, cosy in a sitting room, and makes a hallway feel instantly more welcoming. It also works beautifully as a colour drench, with walls, woodwork and even the ceiling in the same shade. Our article on why colour drenching works explains how to approach that.
- Walls in living rooms and bedrooms. Estate Emulsion, Farrow & Ball's chalky matt, shows off the depth of the colour.
- Kitchens, bathrooms and busy hallways. Modern Emulsion is washable and suited to harder-working rooms.
- Woodwork and furniture. Flat Eggshell, Farrow & Ball's tough, low-sheen finish.
Farrow & Ball recommend their Mid Tones Primer & Undercoat beneath this colour, which you will find on our primers page.
