Browse Paint by Colour and Find Your Shade

The easiest way to narrow your choice is to browse paint by colour. Our paint colour groups take you from pale shades to warmer tones and darker colours. Start with the family you like, then compare its shades.

Whites can have warm, cool or grey undertones. Neutrals range from soft creams and stone shades to earthy taupes. Greens can feel restful or richly botanical, while blues range from gentle and airy to deep and dramatic. Yellow brings warmth, red and pink add character, and grey and black can give a scheme contrast and definition.

These paint colour families are a starting point, not a set of rules. Muted green can sit alongside a neutral, while soft pink works with warm white woodwork.

How Do You Choose the Right Paint Colour for Your Room?

Start with the light, then consider the furniture, flooring and finishes you already have. A shade that looks warm on a colour card may read cooler on a north-facing wall, while stronger sunlight can bring out yellow or red undertones. Before deciding, compare paint colours by shade in the actual room rather than relying on a screen alone.

For more help with light and room orientation, our guide to how to choose paint colours covers what to look for in different spaces. Test shortlisted colours beside skirting boards, curtains or cabinetry so you can see how everything works together.

Compare Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and Paint & Paper Library

You don't have to settle on a brand before choosing a colour. As a UK stockist of Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and Paint & Paper Library, we make it possible to consider shades from all three in one place. You can start with a colour family and compare similar tones before deciding which paint suits your plans.

If you have a favourite maker in mind, browse our designer paint brands. If you'd rather see more options across the whole range, our collection of all paint colours gives you a broader choice beyond the eight groups above.

How Can You Preview Paint Colours Before Buying?

Start with paint colour cards to compare shades side by side at home. Once you've shortlisted two or three, paint sample pots let you test the actual paint in your own space. Apply generous samples and check them in daylight and under your evening lighting, allowing each sample to dry before making your decision.

Our paint visualiser tool also lets you upload a photograph and preview colours on your walls before picking up a brush. It's a useful first look, but a digital preview isn't a substitute for testing paint in the room itself.

Choose a Finish That Suits the Surface

Colour is only part of the decision. The right paint finish for walls depends on the room and the surface, while ceilings, doors and woodwork may need different products. Matt finishes are commonly chosen for walls and ceilings; eggshell, satin and gloss offer alternative levels of sheen for suitable surfaces.

Check the manufacturer's instructions before ordering, particularly for kitchens, bathrooms or woodwork. Some surfaces also require a suitable primer or undercoat. Our paint finish options can help you narrow the choice before selecting a full tin.
