After painting walls, you can usually move furniture back the next day, once the final coat is properly dry, but leave a small gap between furniture and the wall for the first week or two while the paint hardens. Woodwork and painted furniture need more care: paint can feel dry within hours yet take up to seven days (Little Greene's Intelligent finishes) or, for some darker colours, up to 14 days (Farrow & Ball) to reach full hardness.

The difference between dry and cured is what catches most people out. A surface that is dry to the touch can still be soft enough to take an imprint from a sofa arm, stick to the back of a bookcase or scuff when a chest of drawers is pushed into place.

Here is a practical timeline, and how to get your room back without spoiling the finish.

Dry is not the same as cured

Paint goes through two stages. First the water evaporates and the surface becomes dry to the touch. Then, over the following days, the paint film hardens and reaches its full strength.

  • Farrow & Ball give a touch-dry time of about two hours and recommend at least four hours before recoating Modern Emulsion or Modern Eggshell. They note that some darker colours can take up to 14 days to reach full hardness, strength and durability, and advise waiting 14 days before cleaning.
  • Little Greene Intelligent paints can be recoated in one to four hours and take up to seven days to cure fully.

Cool, damp weather slows both stages, so allow longer in winter or in a poorly ventilated room.

A practical timeline

  • Same day: keep everything clear while you paint and while the final coat dries. Leave dust sheets down until the end.
  • The next day: furniture can come back into the room, set a few centimetres away from the walls. Light, freestanding pieces are fine.
  • After about a week: push sofas, beds and bookcases back against walls, rehang pictures and refit shelves. Little Greene's Intelligent finishes will be fully cured by now.
  • After two weeks: darker Farrow & Ball colours should have reached full hardness, and it is safe to wipe and clean the walls.

These are guidelines rather than rules. If a surface still feels at all soft or tacky, give it longer.

Skirtings, doors and woodwork

Woodwork takes the most knocks, so it deserves the most patience. Farrow & Ball advise waiting at least 24 hours before heavy traffic on Modern Eggshell.

  • Keep furniture away from freshly painted skirtings for at least a few days, and longer for dark colours.
  • Prop doors open with a wedge rather than letting them close against a fresh frame, which can stick.
  • Avoid sliding furniture along the floor next to new skirtings. Lift it into place instead.

Painted furniture and kitchen cabinets

If you have painted the furniture itself, the same rules apply, but the pressure on the surface is greater. Our guide to painting IKEA furniture recommends light use the next day and a gentle first week while the paint hardens.

  • Tops and shelves: avoid heavy objects, lamps and stacked books for the first week. Felt pads under ornaments help.
  • Drawers and doors: reassemble carefully and do not overfill drawers straight away, so runners and edges do not rub.
  • Kitchen cabinets: open and close them gently, and avoid harsh cleaning until the paint has fully cured.

For hard-wearing pieces, Intelligent Satin and Modern Eggshell are both tough, wipeable choices once fully cured.

Questions we are often asked

Can I sleep in a room the night I paint it?
With the low-odour, water-based paints we stock, many people do, provided the room has been well ventilated. Keep the bed away from the walls until they have had a few days to harden.

When can I put pictures back up?
Wait about a week, so hooks and frames do not mark the paint. For dark colours, two weeks is safer.

When can I clean the walls?
Farrow & Ball advise waiting 14 days before cleaning. For Little Greene's Intelligent finishes, wait until they have fully cured, which takes up to seven days.
